League of Women Voters – Duncaster Retirement Community

Republican Town Council candidates Joseph Merritt, Patrick DeLorenzo, Joel Neuwirth, James McGovern and Quentin Johnson attended the League of Women Voters open forum on Wednesday, October 9 at Duncaster Retirement Community. The event was open to the public and taped for BATV. The candidates responded to prepared questions and had the opportunity for rebuttal to opposing party responses. Questions were also taken from the audience.

The minority party candidates took questions ranging from open space to recycling bins. Topics included economic development, taxes, town services, property assessments, State and Federal grants, shared services, and the Board of Education. It was clear from the remarks that Republican Town Council candidates stand firm on the top priorities for the Town. These include lowering taxes through increased revenues, job opportunities for residents, securing grants and maintaining a safe and pleasant environment for all to live in. The development of Town Center and improvements to Filley Park also rank high. One party government has lasted too long in Bloomfield and it is time for a change.

The Bloomfield Republican Party has chosen its slate of candidates for this November’s municipal election.

On the Republican ticket for Town Council are incumbents Joseph Merritt and Patrick DeLorenzo along with new candidates Joel Neuwirth, James McGovern and Quentin Johnson. Incumbent Susan True is the Republican candidate for the Board of Education, running for a four-year term. Nicholas Panke is the Republican candidate for the Town Plan and Zoning Commission with Mark Jacobs, the alternate. Lucille Wactowski and Steve Millette are candidates for the Zoning Board of Appeals with Toby Neuwirth, the alternate. Paula Walek is the Republican candidate for the Library Board of Trustees.

Bloomfield Republican Town Committee Chair, Bob Ike, said it is important for the voters to understand we are the local party and are totally committed to the community. We are confident we can pick up a seat this fall by unseating a Democrat because we have the best, most dedicated candidates.

The mission of the BRTC is that we are a diverse, inclusive group of people, interested in giving equal opportunities to all. We, as a party, believe in smaller government … we fight for the people’s right to have the final say … instead of government making all of the decisions. We have the best interests of ALL people at heart.

Locally, we support more affordable housing for low-income families, celebrate the town’s culturally-diverse population and hope to host a fun-family entertainment event. We strive to improve our education system for early childhood through high school, to maintain our recreational areas and parks, and maintain a clean, safe residential environment.

We have a special interest in bringing more economic development and jobs to Bloomfield … and to maintain our low crime rate. We support our vital local charitable services, i.e. our local fuel and food banks and the Police Department’s toys-for-tots campaign.

We hope to begin a scholarship fund for Bloomfield students to pursue higher education and provide a staffed education center devoted to helping our at-risk youth. We’d also support an annual Community Service Day in Bloomfield.

Our slate is committed to a balanced budget with no increases in taxes. We plan to work harder to get the message to our fellow Bloomfield residents that we need more economic development and employment here to ensure a fiscally responsible, comfortable, wonderful place to live and work.
